Summary
Description Chicago Tribune "Ten Years Behind the Parade" cartoon of William Hale Thompson.jpg |
English:
Chicago Tribune "Ten Years Behind the Parade" cartoon of William Hale Thompson. This anti-Thompson cartoon run on the front page of the
Chicago Tribune
on March 24 depicts Thompson marching ten years behind "The Big Parade 1917". This alludes to the United States' effort in
World War I
, as Thompson had been a public opponent of United States entrance into that war in 1917. Thompson is also depicted as and beating a drum emblazoned with his "America First" slogan. A paper sits on the drum's sheet music stand reading "patriotism that pays". Hanging from Thompson's belt is a stake reading "private war on King George". This cartoon criticizes Thompson for claiming patriotism to his advantage, while having failed to support its war effort a decade prior.
